Dhanteras, also known as Dhanatrayodashi, marks the beginning of the Diwali festival and is dedicated to Lord Dhanvantari, the God of Ayurvedic medicine and an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This auspicious day is celebrated with great fervor across India and symbolizes the onset of prosperity and good fortune.
Dhana Trayodashi Pooja: The festival has deep mythological roots. According to Hindu beliefs, on this day, Lord Dhanvantari emerged from the ocean of milk (Samudra Manthan) holding a pot of nectar (amrit) that grants immortality. He is also associated with healing and health, making Dhanteras a day not just for wealth but also for the well-being of family members. Additionally, Dhanteras is considered an ideal time to purchase valuable items, especially gold and silver, as it is believed to attract wealth and prosperity into one’s life.
Dhanteras is celebrated on the thirteenth day (Trayodashi) of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) in the month of Kartika according to the Hindu lunar calendar. This year it is falling on 29th October 2024.
Lakshmi Puja on Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi should be done during Pradosh Kaal which starts after sunset and approximately lasts for 2 hours and 24 minutes. On 29th October dhanteras puja muhurat, Sun set will be at 5:38 pm hence Pradosh Kaal will be from 5:38 pm to 8:13 pm.
